January 2017: Favourite Books

January 2017 Favourite Books - Reading, Writing, Booking

Although I've read a lot in January I haven't actually finished many books, and the ones that I have finished have been a bit...blah. So, this month's favourite books post is a little light. Luckily the ones that I have enjoyed this month have really stood out, so there's not too many of them but they're all little gems.

Scared to Death by Rachel Amphlett

Scared to Death by Rachel Amphlett (Kay Hunter #1)

The body of a school girl is found in an abandoned lab and looks like a kidnapping gone wrong, but there are a lot of signs that point Detective Kay Hunter towards something more complex, and dark.
Scared to Death: A Detective Kay Hunter novel: Volume 1 is a great little thriller. I don't know why, as it's not that short, but it feels compact and slick. I don't usually notice chapter lengths but the chapters are relatively short and well crafted and they make the book flow very well. Scared to Death is pretty twisty and turny, without being exhaustively so and the murderer is suitably disturbing. I'm looking forward to reading the next in the Detective Kay Hunter series when it comes out.

The Girl Before by J. P. Delaney

The Girl Before by J. P. Delaney

I'm not surprised that The Girl Before is getting so much attention; it is a really unique and interesting read. You can read my full review here for more detail, but, keeping it short and sweet, if you're sick of thrillers with Girl in the title that are a bit lack-luster then give this one a try. A suspicious death in a futuristic house, a mysterious architect and characters that you can't trust. This all adds up to a great read that takes you somewhere you don't expect.

Swimming Lessons by Claire Fuller

Swimming Lessons by Claire Fuller

Another new release that I've already reviewed, Swimming Lessons by Claire Fuller is one of those books that takes me a little time to realise how much I liked it. Don't get me wrong, I really enjoyed reading Swimming Lessons, but as more time has passed I kept thinking about it and how good it was. It's beautifully written and captures the emotions and resentments of an eccentric family living beside the sea.

Have you read any of these books? I'd love to know what you think.
